Lowton Junior & Infant School

PSHE

Intent

Personal Social Health Education (PSHE)/Relationship Sex Education (RSE) lessons will prepare children to embrace the challenges of creating a happy and successful adult life, pupils need knowledge that will enable them to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships and to build their self-efficacy. Pupils can also put this knowledge into practice as they develop the capacity to make sound decisions when facing risks, challenges and complex contexts. Everyone faces difficult situations in their lives. These subjects support young people to develop resilience, to know how and when to ask for help, and to know where to access support.

The National Curriculum states that ‘all schools should make provision for personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE), drawing on good practice’.  The Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education (England) Regulations 2019, made under sections 34 and 35 of the Children and Social Work Act 2017, make Relationships Education compulsory for all pupils receiving primary education. The intent at Lowton Junior and Infant School is for PSHE/RSE education to be the starting points that provide the experiences, knowledge and skills to become good citizens in the future.

At Lowton J&I, the children will be given the vocabulary to be able to articulate their feelings.  The intention is to promote mental wellbeing and empathy across the school and into the community.  The children in our school have a range of family backgrounds and life experiences.  It is important that we build upon these experiences to provide understanding of the diversity in our country as a whole in terms of race, religion, relationships.  The intent is to develop tolerant, respectful young people, prepared for their future lives.  PSHE also develops the understanding of health and fitness.  In our school, we will give children the knowledge to be able to make informed choices with regards to diet and exercise.  In our increasingly technological world, the children in Lowton Junior and Infant School use online resources frequently both in and outside of school.  Our intent is to ensure all children are able to stay safe, making the correct choices about their use of technology.
